KwaZakhele - life in a Township is a uniquely intriguing, high quality, large format, hardcover coffee table book that accompanies the reader onto the streets of a place that the apartheid government of South Africa built to be hidden from the city that surrounds it and the rest of the world.

This book provides honest insights and reflections on life in a township like KwaZakhele, providing context for the personal stories of the beneficiaries of the Ubomi Obutsha Centre which are the original inspiration for this book.

The historical context of events, intentions and settlement are elaborated on by historian and writer Dean Allen, and Mxolisi Dolla Sapeta, a local artist, has contributed moving reflections on the experience of growing up in the township space.  This, accompanied by descriptive maps and contextual explainers by Mark Lawler, the director of the Ubomi Obutsha Centre, visually appealing photography and even a few recipes, creates a book that delivers to the reader an enriching insight to this community where happiness, love and faith coexist with the hardships of daily living in a South African township.

The purpose of this book is three-fold:

  1. Raise Funds: To stimulate ongoing support for the UOC.

  2. Tell the Story: To share the story of KwaZakhele, a place built to be hidden from the city around it.

  3. Show Our Appreciation: To acknowledge those who partner with us in building a better society for everyone.

As a collaborative work, much like the Ubomi Obutsha Centre itself, KwaZakhele - life in a Township is an insightfully educational, and personally accessible book produced with international readership and quality standards in mind.

Some clarity and transparency . . .

Like any meaningful endeavor, our efforts come with a range of costs. While many of these are offset through in-kind donations and volunteered time, substantial funding is still needed to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of our work.  Our work has evolved over time. While providing material donations such as food and clothing to those in need remains essential, it is no longer our ultimate goal.  Instead, these donations now serve as a temporary means to ease the daily needs of our struggling beneficiary families and affording them the mental and emotional space to focus on the bigger picture of their lives.  This, coupled with the topics covered in our varied workshops and other interventions, helps them develop the capacity to eventually meet their own material needs.  Achieving this requires the ongoing dedication of individuals who have the passion, time, and ability to contribute meaningful value to this end goal. Unfortunately, none of our current staff can afford to voluntarily offer all of their time without considering their own financial needs.  We recognise the importance of fair compensation for their time, energy, and care so that they can continue making a meaningful impact on the families and community we support and society as a whole.  These are the people who add all the meaningful long term value to the work of the Ubomi Obutsha Centre! Servicing indirect costs like administration, utilities, insurances, etc is always a grudge expense but they do ensure that there is a sound framework within which the core impact work of the Ubomi Obutsha Centre can effectively function.  We aim to keep these indirect costs under 20% of our annual budget. The balance of our budget (80%+) is allocated to direct impact costs which include food for nutrition support; equipment and materials needed to deliver effective psychosocial and education support programmes; and to financially support our community staff who passionately, skillfully and directly impact the vulnerable families we work with.  They ensure that families with genuine needs are brought into the programme and then, while facilitating a variety of intervention activities, they also keep watch for deeper/hidden issues (abuse, learning disabilities, unresolved hurt, etc), help address these issues, adjust inputs and interventions and monitor progress with both compassion and firm accountability. About 45% of our annual budget is allocated to the material needs of our interventions (mainly feeding) and roughly 35% is allocated to supporting our direct-impact intervention and facilitation staff. Please contact us on admin@ubomiobutsha.org if you would like to know more about our costing structures and budgeting breakdown.
