KwaZakhele - life in a Township is a uniquely intriguing, high quality, coffee table book that accompanies the reader into the lives and onto the streets of a place that was originally built by the Apartheid government of South Africa to be hidden from the rest of the world.

This book tells various stories about life in this township.  The historical context of events, motivations and settlement is described by historian and writer Dean Allen.  This provides a background for the personal stories shared by township residents and beneficiaries of the Ubomi Obutsha Centre - the original reason for this book.

Mxolisi Dolla Sapeta, a local artist, has contributed moving reflections on growing up and the general lived experience in the township.  This, together with maps, contextual 'explainers', visually appealing photography and even a few recipes, creates a book that offers the reader a rich picture of this community where happiness, love and faith coexist with the hardships of daily life in a South African township.

The purpose of this book is two-fold:

  1. To be a voice carrying beyond it's isolating borders the many difficult but often inspiring, and sometimes humorous, stories of the people of KwaZakhele

  2. To be utilised as a tool to raise awareness and much needed financial support for the continuing work of the Ubomi Obutsha Centre among many families broken over generations by life in a Township

As a collaborative work between the Ubomi Obutsha Centre and partners in the Netherlands (SUON), KwaZakhele - life in a Township is an insightfully educational, and personally accessible book produced with international readership and quality standards in mind.

You can receive your complimentary copy of KwaZakhele - life in a Township … along with an S18A Tax Deductible Receipt Certificate (South African tax payers only) when you support the Ubomi Obutsha Centre financially, either through our Sustainability Fund or with a minimum Once-Off Donation.
